Travelling Alone – Some Pointers

Many people today are travelling alone to see more of the world. This is possible as many of them have the money and the time to spend any which way they like. And they are doing just that. Many of them are travelling to exotic places and visiting far away destinations in search of that perfect vacation for singles.

There are certain points that need to be kept in mind when a person is travelling alone though. It is a great idea to research the destination a person is travelling to. The cultural practices of the place can make single travellers more comfortable in the foreign locales that he or she is visiting.

It is preferable that the single people take a room on the first floor or above. A room on the ground floor would not come with a view of the outdoors. While staying in a hotel, one should also avoid opening doors to strangers who do not identify themselves.

Another good practice is to get acquainted with the people at the hotel's reception desk; a single traveller can tell them about his comings and goings. This way, they can be in a better position to help, if the need arises.

While travelling alone, it is best to be comfortable on one's own. A person can follow some routine activities, such as drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, taking an afternoon jog, or visiting the market in the evening to create an atmosphere to his liking. He can also decorate his room with candles, flowers, and pictures from home to create a familiar setting.

While dining out, he can take along a book, magazine or journal, or maybe even plan the next leg of the trip. Having breakfast or dinner at the same cafe or restaurant in the morning or at night is also a good practice. This way, the people travelling alone would know more about the ones working at the eating joints and strike up a rapport with many amongst them. These new found friends can assist the single travellers in case of any emergency.

While travelling alone, the singles can also socialise with others in his group. They can share travel tips amongst themselves and even become travel companions – albeit for a part of the journey.

It is also advisable not to trust anybody instantly. The right questions need to be asked before a person tells others that he or she is travelling alone. This way, nobody can take advantage of the single traveller, and he or she would not run into any kind of trouble in foreign locales.

Last but not the least, it is good that a single traveller learns basic self defense to disable an assailant, by striking the eyes, nose, throat, groin, or knees. Not that this would be necessary, but it does not harm to take the precaution if possible.
